A majestic 9 and 10 combo lead Wheatley to victory.

Wheatley 2nd XV travelled to Witney on a glorious Saturday afternoon for a 14:30 KO, which turned out to be a 14:00 KO.

With a few players deciding on the day that they were too lazy and the ground was too frosty to play, lol. Wheatley gathered at Witney with plenty of time to spare.

Before KO, Peter ‘I’ve got a cold’ Ramsdale informed the Wheatley team that the opposition had nine subs, eight more than us. However, Witney did not have the dynamic duo of Gavin Belcher and James Pollard playing at 9 and 10. This was the day legends were made . . . .

With the majority of players warming up KO was upon us.

For the first 10 minutes Witney decided to camp in our 22. The defence held, with big hits stopping the rampaging Witney attack. However, a try was inevitable with Witney going over somewhere near the corner.

Captain Ramsdale rallied the troops and Wheatley set off in hunt for some points. Ramsdale also decided that it was time to use our only replacement, Toby Pocock, and sub himself off. The tries duly came with Harry Bower, Gareth Johnson and Matt Richards all going over in the first half. Gareth converting two.

The second half kicked off and Witney, with their fresher legs, were straight on the attack and with a kick through our new wing come flanker turned and gave chase in what felt like slow motion. The Witney winger just got to the ball to score.

Again, Wheatley rallied and with some sublime ball coming from the majestic 9 and 10, Wheatley ran in another three tries. These came from Mike Ward, Harry Bower and George Van den Burgh.

At this point Pete Ramsdale decided to come back on for the last 10 minutes. Within this time, he made one tackle that resulted in a penalty try being awarded to Witney.

With the time ticking down and the fitness starting to show on both teams the ref finally blew the whistle to give Wheatley 2nds XV their first away win of the 2014/15 season, 22 - 36.
