Outlaws take a big scalp.

Outlaws Out-Muscle Chinnor

Some outstanding work by the Red Baron of Oakley saw the Outlaws saddle up and head for Chinnor with 15 actual players! A series of unfortunate events meant that by KO the men in purple had a team of 14 and big Charlie Gomm had switched to the white heat of the front row for his Outlaws debut, he did not disappoint.

First Half. 14 vs 15 but the Outlaws were full of running and endeavour. Steered around the pitch by the evergreen Ant Cope and with the pack smashing the hard lines the Chinnor line was under massive pressure in the first 10 minutes. A lack of composure saw the last pass hit the deck over and over again and the Outlaws were eventually penalised for holding on. Chinnor kicked long and stretched the Outlaws defence with the man on the blindside flank breaking tackles for fun through the midfield. Finding an edge outside the 13 channel Chinnor went ahead. It was time for the Outlaws to get one of their own and it came through Jayden Jones at 8. Full of bite and energy the young Bokke bounced the Chinnor 10 before going over to get the first of his 4. The teams then traded more tries, Wheatley coming off worse but still in touch at 2 tries to 3 before THE pivotal moment of the half. Chinnor, camped inside the purple men’s 22 spread the ball from one side of the pitch to another. Bodies were put on the line and hit after hit drove them back. Eventually another midfield bust by the Chinnor 6 let them get the ball wide out to the right flank, a Chinnor 2 score lead on the death of half time was certain. Up stepped Phill Glenn, scything down the ball carrier who flipped a despairing pass out to the wing but pressure from the galloping Dave Thomas combined with Cocky’s ankle biting to force the error. Half time and the boys were in touch.

The second half opened with a score almost direct from the kick off. Pete Evans and Kieran De Lang showing the telepathic understanding that only a 40 min introduction can engender sparking an attack from inside the 22. Pete Evans solid as ever under the high ball threatened a direct dart but looked up saw the space and used it. A pass under pressure put Kieran De Lang into space, he needed no second invitation. Carving his way through the now disorganised Chinnor defence he was eventually pulled down on half way. Superbly quick ruck ball was provided courtesy of the big boys and Copey set off through a gap, handing off tacklers with an evil glint in his eye. The icing on the cake was a cut back inside followed by a no look over the head flip back to Hugo Stanford-Tuck who had an easy 20 (40?) yard run in.

With Paul, Keir and Charlie in the front row monstering the Chinnor scrum despite being a 7 vs 8 contest Chinnor’s tries were well taken but opportunistic. The Outlaws never felt like they were going to lose and piled on the pressure all over the pitch. Now forcing errors at scrum time and in open play, Ben Vaughan like a typical nause of a 7 was all over the tackle area and linking play, leading to him grabbing himself a couple of very well deserved meat pies.

The last 10 minutes saw Jayden explode back into double try scoring action with a bullocking run off the back of a scrum a particular highlight.

Other stand outs: Christopher from Canada playing out of position in the second row and breaking the most tackles of anyone all day.

Charlie Gomm putting down the power in open play and in the scrum.

Keith, Cocky and DT in the back three continuously repelling the attacks of their much younger opposite numbers with a combination of guile and effort.

Paul DeLange for being the tight head rock on which the Outlaws second half try feat was built.

Daz for still offering himself on the short line in the 79th minute.

An outstanding start to the playing season for the Outlaws. Special thanks to Tam, Russ, Geoff and Pete for pulling a team together and to all who threw themselves into the game at very late notice, bagging a big win against a big club in the process.

Onto the next one!
