Wheatley win on tragic afternoon

A good win for Wheatley and but a sad day for the club as local legend passes away.

Let me know if this sounds ok?

Wheatley headed in to this home game with unfinished business, after having been trounced in the reverse fixture, where all players minds were on the dinner and dance in the evening, rather than the task at hand.

The game started well for the home side and the quick backs - that have become a trademark of Wheatley's play - instantly set to work against the visitors. Early pressure paid off and scrum half Andy Tippett darted through the defense to score Wheatley's opening points. The conversion was added by Jason Laman.

Tippett was still in good form and scored his second shortly after following some excellent work by the gnarled Wheatley forwards who used their weight and experience to put Crowthorne under some serious pressure before Tippet, again using his gazelle like acceleration, went through for his second of the day.

The visiting side hit back, and a couple of converted tries pushed them in front 12-14.

Wheatley continued to pile on the pressure and after centres Sean O'Leary and Joe Hobdell had barged their way in to the Crowthorne 22, only for a cheap turnover to allow the visitors possesion, probably the fault of a bungling second row. A poor clearance kick went to full back Dan Rule who managed to dodge the tackles of 15 Crowthorne players to score in the corner, this certainly brightened his day after some dreadful catching and a roly poly into touch allowed visitors to get a foothold in the Wheatley half.

Half time score Wheatley 17 - 14 Crowthorne

The second half continued in the way of the first. Wheatley were able to bring on fresh legs at the break and this showed. The added pace and fitness helped Wheatley score a fourth, and bonus point, try as Jason Laman dummied scissors with his centres, used his trademark side step to baffle the opposition, and set Rule loose again. The pocket-sized full back with the bad stubble battered his way over the line for his second of the day.

Crowthorne were still not beaten, and worked their way in to the Wheatley half to score their third of afternoon, again converted. It was a 1 point game heading in to the final quarter but Wheatley were upping the pressure and making the most of their rolling subs and rested players. Despite veteran lock Nick Banton's snake-like wriggling out of tackles and 75 metre break, he managed to just drop the ball with the line begging. Probably because he can't open his eyes properly and with rapid prop Jody Hyde in support.

Joe Hobdell had to spare Banton's blushes and added Wheatley's fifth of the afternoon after a period sustained pressure, including a number of turned over scrums. Pistol Pete stealing having a good second half after being moved from prop to hooker. The defence was creaking and Laman again released his backs to devastating effect and Hobdell scored the final try of the match.

Unfortunately, the game took a sour turn at this point as Laman collapsed and was taken to hospital. The match was abandoned and the final score was Wheatley 27 - 21 Crowthorne. All credit to both teams for their quick actions and response to the accident.

Jason still hasn't paid his subs.
