Wheatley find another gear to over come Chesham and secure fourth spot in the BBO Premiership,

In some of the finest weather we have seen this season Wheatley demonstrated that they are now a team who's resolve can fine away to claw back a victory from the jaws of defeat, a mature performance from 1-18 displayed signs that this team is coming of age.

Kicking off and playing in to "the corner" Wheatley's intent was clear from the outset we were going to be physical and fast giving the Chesham sizeable pack little time to replenish oxygen in the heat of the fine April day. Wheatley struck first on the 10th minute with a well worked try, having probed deep in to the Chesham half Wheatley's forwards continued to hit some hard lines and produce quick ball giving the visitors defence plenty to do, Jack Atkinson carried hard, surrounded by purple shirts the ball came quickly to feed the back line made up forward runners a well timed pass from Number 8 Simon Chadbone unleashed Joe Taylor to jink his way over the line and open his account Aaron Laman slotted the kick 7-0

Laman added a further 3 points with a penalty just outside the 22 after Chesham handled in the ruck giving Wheatley's second visit to the red zone just reward. 10-0

From the restart Wheatley looked intent on the same approach however with lost of space behind the Stags defensive line Toby Butler looks to turn the defensive line with a neat grubber kick, with an uncharacteristic line chase Toby Deane was able to scoop up the loose ball and attack the dog legged defensive line, once in behind Deane was joined by Tom Hirst and with a 2 on one Chesham scored out wide. Luke Bouchier adding the conversion 10-7

With wheatley now finding a rhythm and the Chesham forwards withins in the afternoon sun Chesham hit back with an interception try after Wheatley became a little over confident with the ball in hand, Luke Bouchier pounce quickly on the loose pass and despite a scramble defence almost bringing him down Bouchier was able to keep his footing and score under the posts also adding the conversion. 10-14

Unphased Wheatley started the process again pushing deep into the heart of the Chesham midfield with quick ball and repeated breakdowns Cheshams poor discipline boiled to the surface again this time in the form of a high tackle on secondrow Joe hobdell, Laman doing the honours and pegging the Buckinghamshire side back 13-14.

Wheatley now entered probably their toughest period conceding consecutive penalties and allowing the visitors a brief visit to the hime teams 22, more penalties lead to a succession on line outs and eventually the Wheatley defence succumbed with Matt Reynolds emerging with the ball from the resulting driving maul. Bouchier missing the conversion. 13-19

Unlike other matches in this campaign Wheatley found another gear both physically and mentally the cool heads lead the purple men back into the visitors 22 and more infringement allowed Laman to place a fine kick into the corner from which Wheatley,s forwards set and drive did the rest and on the stroke of half time Simon Chadbone got the ball down bringing the score back to 18-19

Great Team Performance 1-18

Half Time

After the restart Chesham found more resolve in defence with Wheatley finding it harder to break down and the continued rest stops playing into their hand, with 57 minutes played Wheatley Jordan hook was adjudged to have high tackled and was yellow carded, this gave the visitors more impetus, carrying hard Wheatley's defence had its work cut out but with Dan Bland a constant threat at the break down life wasn't mad easy for Chesham, unfortunately for Wheatley Bland was deemed to have entered one particular ruck from the side on the half way and with the Bucks men opting for the post Bouchier produced a fine kick extending the lead to 18-22

Wheatley now seized the moment with Chesham dead on their feet moving the ball around was clearly the best option with Laman, Hobdell and Mpanza moving the ball around Joe Taylor was on hand to do what he dose, stepping inside and pin balling himself off of most of the flailing defenders Taylor found himself over the line with Laman adding the conversion 25-22

Wheatley rode out the remainder of the game with 14 after Dan Blands has yellow card for competing in the air at the line out, a truly resolute performance kept the visitors at bay ultimately conceding the penalty that ended proceedings.

Great weekend at t Wheatley with plenty of people witness to a great team performance.
