Spirited performance not enough to break Slough.

Dan Rule stopping the Slough attack

Wheatley came up against their toughest test of the season when they faced Slough at Holton in the BBO Premiership on Saturday.

Wheatley continue to improve as they were able to improve on the impressive starts shown in recent weeks by crossing the whitewash after some impressive play from the first whistle, from the kick off a well organised kick chase put Slough under pressure and not able clear the 22 with a kick to touch, the resulting line out gave the home team an opportunity to build on some impressive set piece work shown in recent weeks. good speed and accuracy gave the Wheatley forward pack a platform from which to play and the resulting maul gave James Neal a chance to test the defensive resolve and drive over to open the scoring 5-0 conversion missed.

Wheatley continues to press the Sough defence and with far more mobility in the team moving the big Slough pack around was certainly proving to be effective, about 20 minuets in as the pace slowed Slough were able to find their rhythm and with some strong runners the visitors were starting break the defence down it was from a solid platform that Slough recycled the ball and moved it quickly wide and with the defensive line narrow Slough wing Charlie Turner was able to round Dan Rule and pass inside to the supporting Max Miles to open the Slough account Miles also added the conversion 5-7

Wheatley undeterred worked their way back into the Slough 22 but with Sloughs defensive line now functioning well and strong attendance at the breakdown Wheatley conceded a penalty and let Slough off the hook, Miles cleared the threat and pegged Wheatley back to their own 22 and the resulting line out saw a mauls trundle over for James Filsher to score and Miles to add the conversion 5-14

This seemed to spring Wheatley into action agains looking to move that ball at every given opportunity again strong running from James Neal and Jack Taylor put Wheatley into and attacking mindset with quick hands Iain Downer was able to wriggle free from a loose tackle and go under the posts and Aaron Laman added the extra. 12-14

More of the same from Wheatley left them deep in the Slough 22 at the half time whistle and having had the lions share of territory.

Half Time

The second half began with a Slough onslaught, big determined runners looking to bust the defence Robbie Morrison made the most of some poor tackling to go over in the corner 12-19 conversion missed.

Wheatley rode out this storm for the next 10 minutes with strong defensive work from Fraser Peterson and Dan Bland, Wheatley began to find control and were starting to turn things around, indiscipline gave Laman a couple of easy shots at goal 18-19.

Wheatley probed the defence and a quick tap and go from Jack Taylor that saw him go under the posts was not given and eventually the frustration began to show with Wheatley having two further penalties reversed for off the ball infringements, this let the pressure off the visitors and again saw them able to clear the line and produce a clean line out for the resulting male to offer up a try for Richard Cowell, Miles added the conversion 26-18

With 15 left on the clock Wheatley again pushed the visitors back and were rewarded with a penalty, with Simon Chadbone opting for the corner uncharacteristically Wheatley were unable to execute the preceding line out and gave Slough a let off but with the scrum back on track Wheatley continued to peg the boys in white back, another penalty decision reversed gave the defence respite and this saw the game play out on the half.

Final Score 18-26

Wheatley showed further improvement throughout, and this we certainly the biggest test received to date, Wheatley looked the fitter team with Slough constantly having players down and consequently the shortest game time yet this season.

The loss is a bitter pill to swallow put performances of this nature will soon bare fruit,

MOM James Neal, offensive threat throughout and defensive workmate up there with Fraser's
