Aaron Laman get the ball away during Wheatley defeat to Milton Keynes
Wheatley started the day as massive under dogs in their Wadworth BBO Prem fixture to newly relegated Milton Keynes.
With Storm Brian battering the exposed pitch it was Wheatley that set the early pace seeing Joe Taylor come close and although the ball was recycled quickly Wheatley were unable to convert the early pressure into points.
Deadlock was maintained for some 10 minutes before Milton Keynes opened the scoring after capitalising on a loose ball that saw Vincent Clarke able to pace the Wheatley defence for 5 points conversion missed 5-0
Wheatley undeterred continued to press giving the home side plenty to think about it wasn't long before Wheatley were off the mark with a penalty from Aaron Laman 5-3,
Having got points on the board this seem to instil confidence into the Wheatley attack and the visitors were looking to move Milton Keynes around the park at every opportunity, With Wheatley on the attack and some slick hands from Jack Taylor gave Dan Rule the opportunity to light up the after burners and round the home sides defence to score and with Aaron Laman able to harness the force of Brian to land the conversion 5-10.
Milton Keynes seemed to spring into action and with the visitors conceding penalties in midfield MK were able to press the Wheatley line, a resulting line out allowed the home side to mount a sustained attack and despite a great defensive effort from Dan Bland Arther Hurren was able to crash over from short range, with the conversion missed Milton Keynes had levelled the score 10-10
Milton Keynes were now in the ascendancy moving the ball well and using their big ball carrying forwards well, with more pressure in the Wheatley 22 quick hands gave winger Gavin Whitehead opportunity to step through a dog legged defensive line and open his account, Scott Aspinal adding the conversion, 17-10
Wheatley undeterred continued to press right up until Half Time,
It was 2 minutes into the second half before James Neal direct running was rewarded after some great recycling from the Wheatley forwards James was able to keep his balance and cross the white wash bringing the score back to 17-15.
Joe Taylor was next on the scoresheet with after seeing the ball move quickly to the winger Joe had plenty to do but was able to shrug off several defenders and peg back his ears to go under the posts Arron added the extras 17-22, 3 minutes later Wheatley's dominate scrum delivered a pushover try from 10 yards Jack Taylor the benefactor and with the kick of the game given the conditions Aaron added 2 more points making the scoreline 17-29.
With 68 Minutes on the clock Milton Keynes were able to capitalise on some loose play from Wheatley, having picked off an interception and threaten the visitors line, Wheatley's defensive line was able to re-organise but were slow to react to a MK penalty that gave Troy Perry a converted try and gave the home team a glimmer of light 24-29.
On 73 minutes perhaps the most controversial moment of the game Wheatley were penalised for being offside with a Penalty Try! with Milton Keynes probing the Wheatley defence but the defensive wall standing hard it was bitter pill to swallow that the official deemed that a try was inevitable and therefore awarded 7 points to the home side 31-29.
Wheatley did battle on deep in to added time and despite seeing several scrummage re-sets with the MK pack under real pressure Wheatley were unable to get the same rub of the referring green and no penalty was given Full Time 31-29.
Wheatley can take real heart in this performance putting together some exciting attacking play and on another day taken 5 points, Great work from the forwards with the scrummage and line out functioning well and work on the floor commendable, stand out performance from Matt Gibb with some great ball carries and several players out of position George Turner and Luke Janes fitted in well on their debut's, Taking 2 bonus points from todays game was an achieve meant considering only last season these two sides were 2 leagues apart and wheatley now look forward to table toppers Slough coming to Holton next week..
