Wheatley put together a great all round performance to overcome Oxford at Holton in the first round of the county shield, keeping cool heads the home team were on the ascendancy from the first whistle putting Oxford under the cosh at every opportunity, however it was Oxford who scored first after a try went begging from a dominant scrummaging position the ball squirted out the side of the scrum for the Oxford wing to scoop up the ball and and run the length of the field to score an unconverted try. 0-5
Wheatley stuck to the task in hand and continued to get them selves in the rights positions on the park and up the pressure on the visitors, Aaron Laman opened the scoring with a penalty after foul play from the Oxford 8 saw him take 10 minutes in the sin bin and Laman slot the penalty 10-5
More Wheatley pressure saw them overcome the deficit with a try with Jack Atkinson going over from close range with Laman converting 10-5, Oxford added a penalty of their own before half time 10-8
After the break Laman added another penalty to his tally neatly slotting the ball through the uprights from distance 13-8
Wheatley freshens things up bringing on Spencer Bailey into the mix, Jordan Hook added a try after some great forward and back interplay with Hook cutting in off his line to crash over for a converted try 20-8
Wheatley added more fresh legs with Simon Chadbone coming on for the tiring Jack Atkinson, Wheatley were now in top gear moving the ball around and exploiting the space found in the Oxford back line, try started to come think and fast with Michael Ridge, Jack Smith and Joe Taylor all adding to the score sheet with Aaron Laman adding 2 conversions 39-8.
Oxford Hit back with a late try after a halt in play with 2 Oxford players down with head injuries and receiving treatment Oxford took a quick tap and ran in a converted try 39-15.
Some great performances all around the park today with Alex Gabbidon and Pete Mitchell prominent in the loose, Great debut from Zach Guyer at 12 with Duane James gaining experience in the 13 slot. the back 3 of Jack Smith, Joe Taylor and Jordan Hook looked comfortable on the ball and gained ground at every opportunity.
