Wheatley opened the scoring inside the 15 minute mark with Jack Taylor making the most of a dominant scrum giving him a platform from which to work, Taylor was able to dart his way beyond the home sides defensive effort to go under the posts adding the extras 0-7
Wheatley produced arguably the try of the match 5 minutes later after weathering a brief Harwell attack Wheatley turned over ball inside their own 22 and quick hands saw Fullback Jordan Hook in space and what has now become a somewhat of a trademark counter attack employing several handoffs along the way, Hook was able to off load the ball albeit a little fortunately to James Neal who showed a def touch for a big man, nudged the ball through for the supporting Jack Taylor to collect his brace but missing the conversion. 0-12
Wheatley were now scoring at will with Harwell having to make some enforce changes to their back line Wheatley were able to make the most from the confusion, With pressure mounting errors were high and with a scrum inside the 22 Wheatley tight five firing on all cylinders clean ball saw Taylor in space once more, Dan Rule reading the play well, switching play inside and opening his account.
Jack Taylor kicking from out wide 0-17
Again Harwell continued to probe but the Wheatley attack was to hot to handle, breaking from deep Simon Chadbone opened up the defence for the back line, smooth hands from James Neal and Josh Hillsdon gave Joe Taylor little to do before posing the pass to brother Caillin Taylor to score. Jack Taylor adding the extras 0-24
Half Time
With five minutes played in the second period Wheatleys pack were producing good quick ball, Josh Hillsdon was moving the ball wide at pace, winger Dan Rule was able to to round his opposite number for his second. Taylor added the conversion 0-31
Wheatley made several changes with Joe Taylor, James Neal and Pete Evans all taking knocks James Butler, Dave Thomas and Lawrence Watts taking the field, Wheatley took a little time to adjust and conceding several penalties at the breakdown gave Harwell an opportunity, wth the home sides number 8 crashing over from close range with a good use of the American football blocking technique, conversion missed, 5-31
On the 70 minute Wheatley welcomed back Olly Hobdell after a season long injury, the 71st minute gave Dan Rule his hat trick after another strong scrummage saw the ball move quickly wide the Rule to score, Jack Taylor adding the conversion 5-38
Wheatley continues to press and produced perhaps the comedy moment of the year, with nobody to beat Caillin Taylor crossed the line with the slightest of touches from a flailing arm Taylor saw the ball fly from his grasp for him to catch and seemingly drop all at the same time loosing control of the ball.
Wheatley may well look back on the result and feel more points were available but Wheatley’s defensive organisation kept Harwells big ball carriers at bay, and with several changes Wheatley’s ability to pull from depth is a far cry from this time last year.
