The game started with a dubious kick off from Adam Muir, which set the tone for the first 10 minutes as Crowthrone were camped in Wheatley’s half, taking advantage of a disorganised, rusty Wheatley defence scoring the first try in the corner.
This gave Wheatley the motivation to get organised and with some tactical genius from the captain, finally getting over the halfway line and not stopping there, Wheatley spent the rest of the half on Crowthorne’s try line. However, Wheatley failed to capitalise on the position and missed 5 or 6 try scoring opportunities. It looked doubtful that Wheatley would get over the white wash . . . . . but, with final play called, Wheatley had an attacking scrum and deciding to keep the ball in the forwards. Mezz powered over the line for his first try for the club just before the half time whistle.
In the second half Wheatley started strong with Smithy cutting though the oppositions defence to score a wonder try, but Crowthorne responded straight away with a try. From a better kick off, captain Pooch finally got low enough to put a big hit in, which was massively overlooked because Matt Gibb immediately made the tackle of the game. Pooch ♥ Matt 4 eva!
With the game at a stalemate and some interesting play from new fly half dingle, a spectacular kick was put through and with the luck of the bounce; Alfie was on the end of it giving Wheatley the winning score.
A big thank you to Crowthorne for the game and we wish you the best for the coming season.
