Mid table clash in the mighty BB&O Premier see Wheatley WIN

The weather conditions looked a little more promising than Wheatleys match the week before. This was a strong, confident 1st team with the only apprehensions being whether Pooch would get handsy in the rucks.

The decision to use tackle bags for the first time in the warm-up was a good one, and got everyone fired up and ready for the big game ahead. The sunshine on their backs and a pitch in great condition, Wheatley led the kick-off. “The grass is so soft, it’s almost a pleasure to fall on.” As quoted by Coach Brooks.

The first ten minutes of the game involved each team weighing up the other – both trying to work out the oppositions game plan. Simple, yet effective plays by the forwards set the scene for the heavy drive to come. The backs capitalised on this by using wide balls to put Moose and Muir over the line respectively, with Duncan’s successful conversion of the latter.

After some fancy, almost graceful, footwork from the backs, the forwards responded by rampaging rucks, monster mauls and titanic tackling. Slough had some successful line breaks but were cut down by the Wheatley defence. In particular, an early dump tackle by Ramsdale to Sloughs number 8 set the mood for the rest of the game. Following this, Aguis hit the straight, upright stature of a fresh-faced-winger, resulting in Sloughs own supporters yelling “BOOM!” Dougie also wanted a piece of the action and carried the ball into contact at full speed. The opposing player who tried to bring him down resembled something of a child being hit by a flying washing machine. He got low, but Dougie got lower.

Pooch and Shaun rounded off an impressive, co-ordinated, skilful first half with a try each. As the rain came down at the break, Wheatleys heads remained up, as Slough headed back into their own changing rooms, broken.

The second half was unfortunately stained by ill-discipline. This did not hinder Wheatley confidence, focus and aggression. Our open side flanker, Jackson (His name is Callum, HHH) was like poverty… he was everywhere. For his hard work and consistent tackling, he was rewarded by a try under the posts which was converted by Gav. Slough tried to keep their chins up with some fluid attacking plays and had a brief window of joy when fresh-legged HHH, came on pitch and clumsily slipped which collapsed the scrum and conceded a penalty, nearly killing half of the forwards.

Some silky smooth back-play resulted in Moose getting his second try of the game. Rambo Ramsdale rounded off a tight, well drilled Wheatley performance leaving the score at the final whistle at 39-0.

To conclude, a special mention to the referee is needed to congratulate him for remaining vigilant, yet professional in the heat of battle between the two sides. This has been Wheatleys best performance this season and it was a pleasure to be a part of it.
