Faringdon 17-17 Wheatley
For the second week running, Wheatley rolled back the years. With Shandy, Jimbo, and Banton in the side, the teams average age shot up in to the 40s.
The game started well for Wheatley and strong running play was only hindered by a narrow pitch. From the off, Wheatley were on the front foot and all Faringdon could manage was a handful of penalties from Wheatley’s perceived infringements.
Jack Smith powered over for one and Jake Durbin scored the other – with both tries coming courtesy of the vision of scrum half magician James Pollard. With boots of gold and hands to match, he guided Wheatley up the pitch to continually pressure the Faringdon defence. Unfortunately, only 14 points to show from so much pressure came back to haunt the Wheatley team.
The Faringdon fly half being able to kick most penalties due to the shortness of the pitch kept them in touch. In the final 10 of the second half, the home side kept battering at the Wheatley defence. Banton was a menace at the breakdown and probably prevented the tries coming earlier but a rare lack of judgement from Wheatley allowed a try out wide. With the last kick of the game, the Faringdon 10 seemed to lose his kicking boots and shanked an easy kick for the win.
All in all, points were dropped for Wheatley as this was a game for the taking.
Tries - Jack Smith, Jake Durbin
