Wheatley started well putting Hungerford on the back foot and pegging the home side back into their 22, but made a few crucial mistakes that gave Hungerford a let off.

It wasn't until the half hour mark that the deadlock was broken after a well worked scrum Chris Turner crashed in from his wing to batter the Hungerford defence down and open the scoring. Jake lewis added the conversion.

Hungerford seemed to galvanise after the try and hit back with an unconverted try of their own after Wheatley struggled to cope with the direct running from deep and offloading in the tackle.

The first half was now beginning to liven up with Wheatley determined to see out the half with another score it wasn't to be, the sing was taken out of the Wheatley attack after Ezra Rees was yellow carded for a hard ruck entry and a Hungerford player was also yellow carded for taking humbridge.

Half Time 5-7

An enforced change at half time saw Jake Lewis leave the field injured and Simon Chadbone join in the action, with a reshuffle of the pack Jack Smith moved out to the wing, James Butler to 6 and Chris Turner to 10.

After the half Wheatley knew what to do and executed a great game plan again pegging the home team back but this time coming away with point on each visit to the Hungerford 22, some great play from Harry Walker saw him unlock the defence for Alex Gabbidon to crash over, and in Jake's absence Jordan Hook stepped up to slot the conversion.

Almost immediately Wheatley were turning the screw in the scrum and with a 20 meter shove up the field Harry was able to pick out a determined Joe Taylor who crashed over under the posts with Jordan Adding the conversion.

Hungerford added another converted try with Wheatley conceding a series of penalties and allowing the home team to pressure the Wheatley line.

Coming up to 60 minutes Wheatleys best try of the match saw another huge scrum and with all 8 Hungerford forwards in reverse Harry Walker seized the moment and with some fantastic footwork danced through the defensive line and showed a clean pair of heels to the reeling home side back line and went under the posts for Jordan Hook to maintain his 100 % record with the boot.

Wheatley were struck another injury blow soon after with Harry Walker getting a leg injury in contact and was forced to leave the field. With Wheatley light on subs, the game played out with 14 men , Wheatley did concede one more try but kept Hungerford at bay for another 15 minutes .

The game finished 28-19 with Wheatley taking a bonus point win, Hungerford to their credit did not let up and are a far better side than their league position suggest and will almost certainly take a few skelps later on this season.

A huge thanks to the Hungerford medical staff who came to the aid of our injured players and thankfully nothing was broken but a few weeks off will see both players back in action.
